Digitunity Reports Significant Growth in Device Distribution for 2023-2024

Connecting technology donors with recipients, the nonprofit Digitunity tackles misconceptions about the reliability of refurbished computers.

NORTH CONWAY, NH / ACCESSWIRE / May 29, 2024 / As digital connectivity becomes essential, many individuals still struggle to access connected large-screen devices. For over forty years, Digitunity has been addressing this issue. From 2023 through March 2024, the nonprofit made significant strides by distributing nearly 55,000 computing devices valued at approximately $4.1 million to 227 nationwide nonprofit organizations helping those in need.

The donation of these devices conserved energy to support nearly 4,545 U.S. households annually, mitigated greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 2,672 cars, and prevented solid waste comparable to that generated by 5,229 households. However, misconceptions about gently used computers remain prevalent.

More than 36 million Americans lack a personal computer at home, and many households need multiple devices for essential services. Digitunity, by providing refurbished computers donated by businesses and individuals, addresses this gap but faces misconceptions about the value of donated technology.

Susan Krautbauer, Senior Director of Advancement at Digitunity, dispels five common myths about refurbished computers: they are just old used devices, damaged, outdated, unreliable, and risky to purchase. Refurbished computers, thoroughly tested and updated, perform like new and offer significant value.

Refurbished devices are often sourced from major manufacturers and maintained by businesses or schools. These computers undergo rigorous testing and repair processes, ensuring reliability and high performance. Additionally, refurbished devices help reduce e-waste and environmental impact. As of now, 30 states have passed or introduced "Right to Repair" legislation, supporting consumer rights to repair and modify electronic devices.
