First 60 percent share for alternative propulsions

The distribution of new passenger cars with alternative drive systems continues to grow in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. For the first time, the market share of hybrid and electric drives reached 60 percent after three quarters. This means that three out of five new cars run at least partially on electricity.

In September 2024, 65.7% of the 20,155 new cars were equipped with alternative engines. Hybrid engines dominate the market with 41.3% of new registrations since the beginning of the year. Despite a slight decline, pure electric cars achieve a market share of 18.7%.

Vehicle charging remains a challenge. The difficulty of obtaining a charging station deters some potential buyers. The fast charging market is growing, which could make public charging more competitive and attractive.
