Pinellas County, Florida Enhances Traffic Safety with Kapsch TrafficCom Technology
Orlando, April 22, 2024 – In an effort to improve road safety and reduce traffic congestion, Pinellas County has partnered with Kapsch TrafficCom on a federally funded project. Employing advanced technology, the initiative aims to combat the high rate of pedestrian accidents and alleviate traffic issues in Florida's most congested county.
With funding from a $4.6 million Federal Highway Administration grant, the project utilizes Kapsch TrafficCom’s solutions focusing on intersection safety and congestion management. The technology includes intersection-based video analytics and connected vehicle systems designed to alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users at high-risk intersections.
Additionally, Kapsch TrafficCom will apply a combination of predictive analytics and traffic management algorithms to foresee and mitigate potential traffic disruptions on major local roadways. This proactive congestion management effort is expected to improve traffic flow by providing timely routing suggestions to drivers.
Dr. Jeff Adler, VP of Solution Consulting at Kapsch TrafficCom, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting that this project marks the company's first North American deployment of a comprehensive traffic and pedestrian safety solution. The project is set to be completed by the end of 2024, with subsequent system monitoring and calibration planned for the following year.
