Schools Nationwide Can Now Apply to Receive a Bulk Milk Grant

The Chef Ann Foundation has announced new grants for the Bulk Milk program aimed at reducing waste and improving nutrition in schools. Launched in 2023, the program supports the transition from single-use milk cartons to bulk dispensers. Schools across the United States can apply for this grant to receive necessary equipment, materials, and training to implement bulk milk systems in their cafeterias.

According to recent findings, over 275 million cartons of milk are consumed daily in American K-12 schools. The shift to bulk dispensing not only reduces packaging and milk waste but also helps cut down carbon emissions significantly. Ryan Mikolaycik of Austin Independent School District highlighted the success in reducing waste through bulk milk systems.

Laura Smith from the Chef Ann Foundation emphasized the dual benefits of economic and environmental sustainability that bulk milk systems offer. A study by the World Wildlife Fund found an increase in milk consumption among students using bulk dispensers, indicating a preference for the taste of freshly dispensed milk. The application window for the current round of grants remains open until June 27, 2024.
