SpaceRISE Consortium to Operate EU's IRIS² Constellation
On December 16, 2024, the SpaceRISE consortium, including Eutelsat, Hispasat, and SES, signed an agreement to design, build, and operate the IRIS² constellation for the European Union. This public-private partnership has a 12-year concession and focuses on expanding low Earth orbit capacities.
The IRIS² constellation aims to launch about 290 satellites by 2030. It will provide enhanced connectivity for consumers, governments, and businesses, bolstering Europe's digital sovereignty. The project, worth approximately €10.6 billion, is 60% publicly funded, with Eutelsat contributing €2 billion.
Eutelsat, acting as the technical lead, will utilize its LEO expertise and Ku band spectrum to develop the constellation's design. Expected revenues of at least €6.5 billion will come from the EU and global distribution of LEO capacities.
