Thai Cement Industry Sets Bold Roadmap Towards Net Zero 2050

Dr. Chana Poomee, the Chairman of the Thai Cement Manufacturers Association (TCMA), has unveiled a comprehensive strategy titled 'TCMA Synergizing the Actions toward Net Zero 2050'. This initiative aims to transition the Thai cement industry towards clean energy and achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. The plan includes enhancing industry competitiveness and responding to the climate change megatrend with innovative solutions and global partnerships.

The TCMA's vision encompasses significant missions such as the development of low-carbon cement, expansion of resource-efficient mining practices, building an integrated waste-to-value ecosystem, and transitioning the industry to clean energy. These efforts are supported by collaborations with local and international partners, aiming to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster sustainable growth.

Additionally, the "PPP-Saraburi Sandbox: A Low Carbon City" project is introduced as a model for reducing greenhouse gas emissions through public-private partnerships. This trial area in Saraburi Province will focus on energy transition, industrial processes improvement, waste management, and land use strategies to create a blueprint for nationwide application.

Dr. Chana emphasized the importance of regulatory support and the potential scalability of successful projects to other regions. He highlighted the TCMA's commitment to international and regional collaborations to achieve decarbonization goals. The Thai cement industry is optimistic about a rebound in 2024, driven by various economic factors, despite challenges such as inflation and household debt affecting the broader economy.
