Verbio Welcomes Decision on Anti-Dumping Proceedings

Leipzig, July 22, 2024 – Verbio has expressed support for the European Commission's decision to impose preliminary tariffs of 12.8% to 36.4% on Chinese biodiesel and HVO exports starting mid-August. This decision highlights the EU's commitment to counter unfair trade in the biofuels sector, expecting to curb low-cost imports into the European market.

The anti-dumping proceedings against Chinese biodiesel began in December 2023 following a complaint from the European Biodiesel Board. The complaint cited a surge in cheap imports that disrupted the market, causing some European biofuel plants to shut down. Verbio's operations, however, remained stable due to their focus on rapeseed oil-based biodiesel, less affected by market fluctuations.

Germany is also reacting to these developments. While the Federal Environment Minister initially supported extending Upstream Emission Reductions (UERs) until 2028, the end date has now been set for 2025. This policy change, combined with increasing GHG quota targets, will significantly impact the GHG savings requirements, pushing for better regulatory measures and market stability.

Verbio emphasizes that anti-dumping duties are only a short-term fix. Comprehensive control and sanction measures are necessary for a truly sustainable solution.
