First installation of Leclanché LeBlock battery energy storage system goes live on Mediterranean island
- Modular and scalable LeBlock installation features a 1.2 MW / 2.6 MWh capacity system
- Solar + storage microgrid application is designed to maximize the consumption of solar energy generated in adjacent solar field
YVERDON-LES-BAINS, Switzerland 06 April, 2023 – Leclanché SA (SIX: LECN) has delivered, installed and commissioned a multi-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) on a Mediterranean island marking the first installation of the Company’s breakthrough LeBlockTM stationary storage system (click here for images).
The microgrid storage solution was built for a major Greek transmission system operator (TSO) and was designed to maximize the consumption of energy generated by an on-site adjacent solar photovoltaic system. The battery energy storage system (BESS) consists of a Leclanché LeBlock 1.2 MW / 2.6 MWh system including four Battery Blocks, each equipped with two liquid-cooled battery racks, electrical and cooling system interconnections and an embedded fire detection/suppression system with automatic activation.
The LeBlock BESS includes a LeBlock Combi Block which provides the thermal management for the battery blocks and the electrical protection and connection for the inverters. The Combi Block houses the chillers and pumps. Additional built-in protections include fused disconnectors and ISO monitoring for each connected battery bank and a communication interface to the master battery management system.
LeBlock is Leclanché’s advanced high-safety, fully modular and scalable system design ideal for microgrids and a wide range of utility applications. Its plug and play architecture makes it easy to interconnect blocks while also integrating system auxiliaries. The system supports fast installation on-site and battery capacity can be easily augmented. Critically, LeBlock reduces the total cost of ownership, as well as its own environmental footprint, through simplified logistics and installation, possible reconfiguration and easy return for recycling at the end of its life cycle.
“LeBlock is gaining a reputation in Europe and the Americas for its high-safety, modular and scalable design that makes it relatively simple to configure, ship and install with numerous environmental and economic benefits,” said Guido Guidi, SVP Global Sales, Leclanché Stationary Storage. “We’re pleased to have partnered with our client on this solar + storage microgrid project.”
