• New "rigid busbars" made of aluminium from HPW are 50 % lighter than copper busbars and space-saving with high power distribution efficiency

Linz, 5th July 2023 - HPW Metallwerk GmbH (HPW), a manufacturer of high-performance copper wires for the ever-growing e-mobility, renewable energy systems and industry, is starting to launch a new, patent-protected generation of high-performance wires for e-mobility. For the first time, the HPW "Rigid Busbars" succeed in replacing conventional copper as the primary conductor material with aluminium. The new dimensionally stable flat conductors from HPW are characterised accordingly by superior product properties. In next-generation electric vehicles - passenger cars and heavy-duty traffic - they score with up to 50 % less weight compared to conventional copper wires. The tight bending radii achievable with the new Busbar product enable optimised installation in the tightest spaces in vehicles when connecting the battery modules to each other and to the electric motors. These advantages in terms of weight and space requirements, combined with high efficiency, are important features to support car manufacturers in the technological further development of their e-mobility fleets.

Due to the advantageous product properties compared to flexible power cables, HPW has already won well-known TIER1 suppliers as the first customers for the "Rigid Busbars". Overall, HPW expects a dynamically developing market demand in the coming years and is therefore planning significant production expansions. In the medium term, the product should account for a high single-digit percentage of total sales. HPW is thus pushing ahead with its further strong growth in the e-mobility sector, which currently already accounts for almost half of the group's total turnover and is expected to increase more than fivefold in the medium term.
